Once a native of Britain, the original wild boar became extinct in the thirteenth century. Numerous attempts at reintroduction took place in subsequent centuries, namely into estates for hunting purposes, and it is recorded that James 1st released animals into Windsor Park in 1608 and 1611. His son, Charles 1st also released German wild boar into the New Forest. The antipathy of local farmers saw these attempts largely unsuccessful, though there are now a few small pockets of boar living wild in England.Taxidermy reached its hey-day in the nineteenth century, spurred by the Victorian obsession with the natural world.
