SOLD
Origin: Italian
Period: Early 20thC
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1930-40
Height: 13”
Width: 19.5”
Depth: 12.25”
The wonderfully decorative softwood box in the form of eight book spines to the frontage in marbled turquoise paper and each reading ‘famiglia’ (family), retaining the ivory ribbon to the centre, the other sides clad in a green and pink marbled paper with brass fluer de-lys mounts, opening to reveal a roomy vacant inner storage compartment, and surviving from early twentieth century Italy.
The box is in good all-round condition, with no later paper, there are a couple of small fissures as per the photographs..
It is not clear when the first book box was originally made but this is in a good large size and is hugely attractive. It would have been used for documents, in this case relating to the given family would have likely been one of a larger group.
A versatile and attractive piece and one that would make a lovely gift for those secret mementoes.
