The unframed and double sided English school painted in oils on panel in the primitive style showing a brown trout in profile on a sea green background and signed ‘Craigalliain half pound trout 1914..AJGC’ to the lower right corner, and a landscape view of Craigallain Loch itself to the reverse, survives from First World War period Britain.
The painting is signed AJGC and is in un-cleaned condition. The overall condition is original and there are no cracks to the panel. There are two small areas of loss to the nose of the trout, with two bored holes to the reverse on the landscape side, where the picture has obviously been mounted.
The naïve and primitive execution of the painting is charming and shows a brown trout in full profile, with its typical skin pigmentations and was obviously the artist’s prize catch of the day in 1914. The reverse is in a more impressionistic style and shows a breezy spring day at the presumed location of the catch, Craigallian Loch.
Craigallian Loch is about 3 miles along the west highland way from Milngavie in Scotland, UK and has always been a good spot for trout, salmon and pike fishing.
A hugely charming and primitive piece of art, painted at a time of real uncertainty, proving a beautiful and rather private insight into one man’s venture into the Scottish highlands.
