An Unusual 19thC Sarcophagus Ottoman c.1840-60

SOLD
Origin: English
Period: Early/Mid Victorian
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1840-60
Height: 33” or 18.5” at seat
Width: 45”
Depth: 18.75”

The rather unusual scroll backed ottoman, of well-proportioned waisted sarcophagus form, standing on concealed castors, the carcass being untouched and showing much of the original upholstery being tired, though original, the seat lid opening to reveal a vacant storage interior to a lower railed apron, and the whole surviving from the middle of nineteenth century England.

The ottoman is sturdy and stable and there is no worm or major damages. She stands well and is ready for re-upholstering which we can do for you at cost, with a fabric of your choosing, if so desired. The original silk can be seen in many parts. The concealed castors are all present, with the front-end facing apron rail being a later replacement.

A great country house piece which we haven’t quite seen the like of before.
