The thick card dance cards, some with gilt edging, with annotations in pencil and original attached corded mini pencils, the fronts embossed with details of various balls and dances, dating from 1913 to 1914. Two cards open up, making them essentially four sided. Locations for the dances are all in the North of England, with Hartlepool, Middlesborough, Stockton-on-Tees, Durham and Perth all mentioned.
The condition is superb considering these cards would normally have been discarded straight after the ball, there are the handwritten notations made and some general wear but the overall order is good. One card is loose to the spine.
A dance card or programme du bal is used to record the names of the person with whom one intends to dance each successive dance at a formal ball. They appear to have originated in 18th century, but their use first became widespread in 19th century Vienna.
A good group of cards, that are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
