SOLD
Origin: English
Period: Regency
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1815-25
Width: 16”
Height: 30” or 15.5” at seat
Depth: 17.5”
The decorative Regency faux bamboo side chair, displaying distressed banana yellow paintwork, the splat with six spheres, to bamboo supports, the cane panel seat over splayed and turned simulated bamboo legs and stretchers and a further sphere, and surviving from the first quarter of nineteenth century England.
The chair is in good original condition and we have only simply given her a light wax to protect the paintwork which is beautifully worn in the right areas. There are no losses or worm. She may have been cut down slightly as she is slightly lower than the average of this type.
The influences on Regency design and taste were legion; from Sheraton’s neoclassicism, Henry Holland’s Anglo-French taste, the Greek revival of Thomas Hope, and the Chinoiserie favoured by the Prince Regent, to an interest in the Gothic, Old English and rustic. The Regency attitude to interior decoration often involved treating each room as a unit with individual furnishings and wall decorations in harmony of theme or colour scheme.
A beautiful corner chair for a landing, bathroom or bedroom.
