A Late 19thC Oil on Canvas of a Still Life of Flowers & Fruit

£480.00

Origin: English
Period: Late Victorian
Provenance: Unknown
Date: c.1890-1900
Height: 21”
Width: 15”

Painted in oils on canvas, depicting a still life of an assortment of flowers in whites, pinks, greens blues and oranges, upon a smoky ebony ground, the posy bunched in a gadrooned pedestal vase sat on a ledge with grapes and other fruit below, the whole presented unframed and surviving from the late nineteenth century in untouched condition.

The painting is apparently unsigned and has some wear to its surface with a slight layer of craquelure but no holes, loss or damage. It could be cleaned if so desired but proves wonderful undisturbed.

The use of the dark background was a common trend used by still life artists that only really changed with the likes of Monet’s works and Van Gogh’s Sunflowers in 1888.

A charming sleepy picture, its colours still popping at the viewer, illustrating the simple balance and beauty of inanimate objects.
